Speckled Trout, or Spotted Sea Trout, are commonly referred to as Specks. These are a favorite summertime quarry when it comes to angling. Fish for these from early spring to early fall, say from April to October, depending on the weather, of course. They are more active when the air and water temps are a little warmer, so mid-summertime is ideal for Speck fishing.
Springtime is a good time to get out the popping corks. Tie one to about a 30" mono leader and plastic shrimp. It's pretty easy and fun too. The pop from the cork riles up the mama trout who is protecting her nest, and triggers her strike. It's pretty cool when you get it working and you'll soon become addicted. You can make your cork double as a float and slow troll a live minnow at your desired depth. It takes a lot of patience, but when big mama trout grabs hold, it's worth the wait.
When it does heat up in the summertime, there are plenty of places to find fish - but you got to get out early. They will lose their spunk in the midday heat. It doesn't always have to be sunny to go fishing though. You'd be surprised how many bites you'll get when it's overcast. Go to our Jigs and Rigs section and find the right bait for your next trip.
